ABOUT HYPNOSIS AND HYPNOTHERAPY IN BOLTON - COMMON QUESTIONS

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a state of mind where the person usually experiences a pleasurable deep relaxation while the mind remains very alert in a focused way.

It is often referred to as a ‘trance state’ and is an entirely safe and naturally occurring phenomena with no adverse side effects. People often experience a light form of hypnosis without realising or calling it that. Examples of this are being so engrossed in a television program or a hobby so that you don’t notice someone come into the room (or even sometimes that they are talking to you) or driving somewhere safely and competently but doing so unconsciously on ‘automatic pilot’ and when arriving realising that you cannot really recall the journey. It is also similar to that dreamy state than occurs when you are about to go to sleep and when daydreaming.

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic application of the hypnotic state.

During hypnosis, the unconscious part of the mind becomes accessible so that the hypnotherapist can work directly with that powerful part of your mind which is responsible for the vast majority of your behaviours and functioning as well as use and develop your inner resources.

The trained and qualified hypnotherapist can induce an appropriate hypnotic state with you and use skilled verbal communication and suggestions which can bring about beneficial and often profound lasting and positive changes which continue when you are no longer in hypnosis. Hypnotherapy can therefore help you to make lasting, positive changes, overcome long-standing habits and problems and to achieve your goals.

Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a variety of medical and psychological conditions as well as being used for other issues such as increasing confidence and/or performance or managing pain.

CAN EVERYONE BE HYPNOTISED?

The majority of people can be hypnotised. It is a collaborative process between the Clinical Hypnotherapist and the Client where you choose to engage with and enter into the hypnotic state as you have come to address your issue in this way. No-one can be hypnotised against their will.

WILL I LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS OR BE ASLEEP?

No. You will remain conscious throughout hypnosis, although in hypnosis a person often looks as though they are asleep. You will be aware of what is going on during hypnotherapy.

WILL I LOSE CONTROL OR REVEAL SECRETS?

No. You retain control where you are fully aware of what is going on and would not do or say anything you do not want to. If you did not want to say something when you are not in hypnosis, you won’t in hypnosis either. Hypnosis is an empowering state, not the opposite.

IS IT POSSIBLE I WON’T COME OUT OF HYPNOSIS WHEN THE SESSION IS OVER?

No. Before you go into hypnosis, I will explain how I will bring you out at the end. Everyone comes out of hypnosis in this way. I ensure this is the case.

Even if a person was not brought out if the hypnotic state, it has been demonstrated that they will do so naturally in time, or they will simply fall asleep and sleep is a different state to hypnosis - if someone is asleep they are no longer in hypnosis.

CAN I DRIVE AFTER BEING IN HYPNOSIS?

Yes. When you leave after a session you will be able to continue your day as before.

ARE SESSIONS CONFIDENTIAL?

Yes, of course. It is extremely important that you feel able to discuss anything. This is a cornerstone of therapeutic practice and one I take very seriously at all times.

IS THERE ANY TOUCH INVOLVED?

No. I use modern techniques and no touch is involved.

DO YOU GUARANTEE RESULTS OR THAT I WILL BE CURED?

You may consider that no doctor or medical professional would guarantee a ‘cure’ and no psychotherapist would either. Hypnotherapy is no different and I do not believe it is responsible or ethical to guarantee results. This is because hypnotherapy, although a powerful form of therapy, like other therapies is not a magic wand. Instead it is a collaborative process of change and if you are motivated and ready to change, the chances of success are already increased.

What I can guarantee is that I will be fully committed to your hypnotherapy treatment and will use all my knowledge, skills and experience to assist you in achieving lasting positive change you want.

I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION THAT ISN’T COVERED HERE

Please get in touch and we can discuss any other questions you may have to help you decide if hypnotherapy is right for you and I am the right therapist.
