Interesting findings from research show that hypnotherapy relives non-cardiac chest pain and patients use less medication.
A group of patients with non-cardiac chest pain who had angina-like symptoms (but normal coronary angiography) were treated through hypnotherapy in twelve half hour sessions over seventeen weeks.
These patients were compared with another group who had the same medical symptoms but who were provided with ‘supportive listening’ sessions and a placebo medication (this is the ‘control’ group).
12 of the 15 patients who engaged in hypnotherapy reported improvement in severity of chest pain as well as in general well-being, compared with only three from the other ‘control’ group (who did not have hypnotherapy).
The investigators hope that this may reduce the need for coronary angiography in such patients.
