Symptoms of Anxiety : The Essential Guide

The essential and useful guide to all the main symptoms of anxiety.

 

 

There are common symptoms of anxiety, although everyone does not necessarily experience all of these.

 

Symptoms are also categorised according to how they are experienced, i.e. as physical (physiological or bodily symptoms), emotional symptoms, behavioural symptoms and cognitive symptoms (mental or psychological symptoms).

 

 

 

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

 

  • Increased heart rate or a pounding heart

  • Increased breathing rate (breathing too fast - hyperventilation, struggling to catch the breath)

  • Tight feeling in chest

  • Tight stomach/butterflies in stomach/churning stomach/feeling sick

  • Headaches (often a tension type headache)

  • Increased perspiration/sweating

  • Feeling hot, sometimes experienced as hot flushes

  • Feeling light headed or dizziness

  • Tingling hands and/or feet (pins and needles)

  • Shaking

  • Increased muscle tension (often in shoulders and jaw)

  • Dry mouth

  • Insomnia

  • Blushing (flushed face/going red)

  • Clenching /grinding teeth (bruxism)

  • Increased need to go to the toilet

 

 

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

 

 

Feeling:

 

  • anxious

  • panic

  • scared/fear

  • distressed

  • on edge

  • agitated

  • uneasy

  • apprehension

  • lack of hope

  • detached

 

 

BEHAVIOURAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

 

  • Doing or not doing things that you would otherwise do, or want to do

  • Avoiding places, people, situations or objects

  • ‘Checking’ behaviours

 

 

PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY

 

  • Repetitive, negative automatic thoughts

  • Negative mental images/pictures (often picturing the ‘worst case scenario’)

  • Thinking you may lose control

  • Thinking things will go wrong

  • Thinking you cannot cope if things go wrong

  • A sense of great apprehension or dread

  • Thinking you may die/have a heart attack/be sick/faint/have a seizure

  • Thinking you want to get out of the situation or away from the object

  • Excessive worrying

  • Inflexible thinking

  • Reduced concentration and ability to maintain focus

  • Irritability

  • Reduced motivation

  • Thinking others are aware of your anxiety

  • Thinking others are making negative judgements about you

  • Mental tension
